At the same time I was working on (It’s Bean) ‘A Hard Day’s Mite’, I was browsing in a secondhand bookshop and came across a well-thumbed copy of Brighton Rock by Graham Greene. I have always loved the crisp design of the Penguin Classics range of books in their different colours. This gave me an idea for a new range of titles by Sanguine Books! Using some of the other food types and related characters I had had photographed for an original montage, I started work on this, with the Hompride Men taking ‘pride’ of place.

Maybe it was down to the constant negative news feed being pumped into the house by the media – particularly about the austerity measures being implemented throughout most of the world -the book name came first, closely followed by the slight news-related change to the author’s name. To give the cover a slight undertone of menace – as well as the similarity with the bowler hats – the character on the right has a look inspired by Alex from Anthony Burgess’s ‘ A Clockwork Orange’. The cover features a variation on the literary logo with the bird carrying a reddish-brown (Sanguine) wood-cased pencil.
